Finding a place to try your hand at this trendy sport is easy, as pickleball courts can be found in parks and sports centers throughout the city. Some of the San Diego pickleball courts are even free! How cool is that? Additionally, there are a host of tournaments, leagues, and events for players of all experience levels.

Best Pickleball Courts In San Diego

Pacific Beach Recreation Center

As one of San Diego’s most popular places for a game, it’s no surprise the Pacific Beach Recreation Center has a thriving pickleball scene. 

Here you’ll find both indoor and outdoor courts, which players can use free of charge. Nets and courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The center is open every day except Sundays, with pickleball hours varying depending on the day. Be sure to check out their court schedule before heading out. 

There’s no parking on-site, however, there are many free parking areas within a few minutes walk.

Pacific Beach Tennis Club

Pacific Beach Tennis Club is another busy spot for pickleball in San Diego, and it’s suitable for players of all skill levels. 

You can opt to reserve a court for $14 an hour through their online reservation system or join in on an open play event. Open play events are usually held every Wednesday morning and Thursday evening.

For a more social outing, this club also runs Friday Night Mixers for individuals and groups. 

While many experienced players frequent this club, it’s also very beginner-friendly. Outdoor courts are available to book any day of the week, and nearby parking is available.

The Hub Pickleball

One of the city’s top places for pickleball players, The Hub, has an incredible 26 pickleball courts. All courts are organized by skill level to suit individual needs. 

Courts are available to members for open play at any time from 8 am – 9 pm (8 am – 6 pm on Sundays). For anyone hoping to brush up on their skills, many world-class instructors are on hand to facilitate group and private lessons. 

Leagues and round robins are held regularly at The Hub, as well as several annual tournaments. There are multiple membership options with varying benefits and inclusions, such as the gold package for frequent players for $99 per month. 

Non-members can avail of the facilities with different day passes or lessons, starting around $15. You can also find a pro shop and restaurant on-site.

Their level of commitment to the sport makes this one of our favorite pickleball courts in San Diego.

Barnes Tennis Center

Situated in beautiful Point Loma, Barnes Tennis Center is a fantastic place for a round of pickleball or two.

Open play costs just $5 per person on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am – 12 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 -7 pm, and Saturdays from 1 – 3 pm. You can also pre-book courts for $15 per hour for groups of four. 

Novice and experienced players can up their skills through lessons offered. Plus, visitors can participate in a mix of traditional and party leagues held throughout the year.

Currently, there are seven pickleball courts, with an additional 12 sets to open up over the summer.

Nobel Recreation Center

Located north of Downtown San Diego, the Nobel Recreation Center boasts two outdoor pickleball courts and three indoor courts, and free-to-use portable nets are available on-site. 

You can play any day of the week, excluding Sundays, usually from around 10 am – 9 pm.

The easygoing nature of this center makes it a great place for those new to the sport to hone their techniques in a non-competitive setting.

These pickleball courts are part of an expansive park, and there’s plenty of parking in the area. 

North Clairemont Recreation Center

Another facility offering free use of its indoor pickleball courts is the North Clairemont Recreation Center. Open for any experience level, this center has two courts, though you will need to bring along your own net. 

Open play events are often held here for singles and doubles.

Be sure to check online for up-to-date information on upcoming tournaments and happenings, as the courts here are multipurpose and also facilitate basketball and tennis games.

Ocean Air Recreation Center

The Ocean Air Recreation Center offers up to six pickleball courts, which can vary depending on the day.

All of the courts are indoors, and they generally have allocated time slots for pickleball on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. 

It’s free to play here, and they provide portable nets, so you don’t have to bring your own net. But players must set up and dismantle before and after games.

It’s important to note the courts are unavailable on weekends, and usually open from 9 am – 7 pm midweek, closing at 5 pm on Fridays.

Parking and restrooms are available on-site and free for all visitors to use.

Balboa Park Activity Center

Balboa Park Activity Center’s indoor pickleball courts have a lot to offer avid players. 

Ideally located in the picture-perfect Balboa Park, this complex has five air-conditioned courts in a gorgeous building surrounded by palm trees. Best of all, playing here is totally free of charge. 

Open play takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 am to 2:30 pm, and Wednesdays between 3 – 5 pm. But ensure you keep an eye on their schedule for any changes. 

There are plenty of facilities for guests here, including a pro shop, food, and restrooms. Best of all, you can enjoy the rest of what Balboa Park has to offer before or after your game.

Coronado Island Marriott

Unusual in its location on the grounds of a hotel, the Coronado Marriott pickleball courts are open to guests and the public.

Partake in a game of singles or doubles on one of the eight well-lit outdoor courts amid the hotel’s fabulous surroundings. 

Open play is available for $6 from 8 am – 12 pm, Monday – Thursday, or if you wish to make a reservation outside these times, there’s a fee of $24.

If you couldn’t already tell, San Diego is blessed with numerous free pickleball spaces. Found at the Morley Field Sports Complex in Balboa Park, this gym houses nine indoor courts at no cost to players. 

Open play takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12 – 3 pm and every Saturday from 1 – 4:30 pm for a range of ability levels.

The gym has plenty of parking and restrooms available.
