Derby United

Experience roller skating through the Derby United outdoor park, surrounded by impressive works of graffiti, selfies stations, and bumping jams. Join a public lesson, available five days a week, or a private one-on-one class for people of all ages, from adults to young children.

Public skating sessions are the most popular among those who already know a thing about rollerblading. Standard entrance fees cost $15, with that you get quad skate rentals for the lesson.

For those who need a little more guidance, check out the instructed classes for $20. Enjoy a full hour learning the basics and getting on your feet through the challenging course. These are available twice a week, but you should book beforehand as spots sell out quickly.

Grab your buddies and hit Skate World. Boasting two world-class rinks and classes for all skill levels, this is hands down one of the best roller skating rinks in San Diego.

There are five skate sessions for visitors to choose from at Skate World. These include Public Skate Sessions ($15), Skate School ($20), Adult Skate Nights ($15), Coffee Clutch ($15) and Lunch Time Skate. All are held at various times and offer something different to the other.

After your roll around the rink, pop into the snack bar for a bite to eat. From Bavarian pretzels to yummy pizzas, you won’t be short of delicious snacks to refuel after some fun exercise.

The newly reopened Viejas Outlets San Diego roller rink is back and welcoming skaters. Boy, have they had a makeover, with flashy designs and open spaces, you’re sure to love it.

Open from Friday – Sunday, 4 pm until 9 pm, plus Thursdays in summer, entry costs $10 per person and includes skate rentals. If you plan on taking classes, the Unlimited Season Pass might suit you. It’s only $99 and valid through September 4th.

Ocean Beach

Known as Robb Field Skate Park, Ocean Beach’s skatepark offers 40,000 square feet of space designed as a street-style course. It features insane bowl drops, multiple handrails, sharp ledges, and an octagon volcano.

Robb Field Skate Park was created by avid local skaters who knew exactly what the community would like. The park opened back in 2000 and is situated just by the entrance of Ocean Beach. You’ll be able to spot it without even looking for it.

Coronado Skatepark

Spanning 16,000 square feet, the Coronado Skatepark attracts rollers from all over the city with its cheap $5 entry fee and incredibly fun course. The park contains lots of high ramps, jumps, and deep bowls.

Beginners will love the Street Plaza, a 3 foot crater where many newbies begin their journey. The Clover Bowl and the Teardrop have much deeper drops, up to 8 feet, so they’re more enjoyed by experienced skaters.

Oceanside

Oceanside is known throughout San Diego as one of the main skating hubs. It features five skateparks: John Landes Skatepark, Libby Lake Skatepark, Martin Luther King Skatepark, Melba Bishop Park & Skatepark, and Prince Memorial Skatepark.

It’s easy to understand why so many love skating here. You’ll be spoiled for choice deciding where to zoom in Oceanside.

There’s no staff or team onsite at any of the mentioned roller skating courses. Protective gear has to be worn at all times, and visitors are only allowed to skate during daylight.

Skate your way around the La Mesa Skatepark. It’s a free entry, unsupervised site where a lot of experienced rollers tend to congregate.

It’s an unlit park featuring two sizable ramps, benches, and fencing. Safety gear such as helmets, knee pads and elbow pads are required, and the consumption of alcohol in and around the area is prohibited.

Roller Skating Paths & Parks in San Diego

Mission Beach/ Mission Beach Boardwalks

Get the good times rolling at the fully flat Mission Beach Boardwalk. This is the perfect place for skaters to show off their skills while soaking up the warm Californian sun.

The three mile boardwalk is popular among all outdoor sports enthusiasts, from joggers to cyclists, so you won’t be alone. There’s an 8 mph speed limit at the Mission Beach Boardwalk, and a lot of groups passing by, including mothers with little ones, so be careful while on rollerblades.

The Pacific Beach and Mission Beach boardwalks are connected and provide access to both beaches, in case you want to have a dip in the sea to cool off. No doubt, this is one of the best spots for roller skating in San Diego.

Seaport Village/Embarcadero

The 14 acre Seaport Village waterfront is another excellent rollerblading spot just outside downtown San Diego. Skate past tons of evening entertainment venues, gorgeous restaurants, and lovely cafes. All while soaking up enchanting views of the harbor.

Everyone’s favorite route is the Rady Shell at Embarcadero. It’s mostly flat and has a couple nice paths to roll along.

Bike Shore Bikeway 

Are you up for a 24 mile trail offering unbeatable coastal vistas, countless palm trees, and picturesque beaches? If so, the Bike Shore Bikeway is right up your alley.

Begin in Downtown San Diego, then roll onto the ferry over to Coronado, and spot the jaw-dropping Silver Strand. Then glide through adorable neighborhoods such as Imperial Beach and Chula Vista.

More than half of this route is car-free. It’ll be just you and the other bikers and bladers for a good portion of the ride.

Sunset View Park

Next up, we have Sunset View Park, an 11.2 acre site in southern San Diego, east of Chula Vista. This space is technically a hockey arena, but plenty of everyday skaters make use of it too.

A couple groups meet up throughout the week and host events, and sometimes even lessons for beginners. You could hugely benefit from skating here if you’re new to the sport.

Besides roller skating, Sunset View Park is a public area filled with a variety of facilities. While you’re here, enjoy the BBQ areas, basketball courts, pony rides, soccer fields, and walking trails.

Father Junipero Serra Trail in Mission Trails Park

Put your legs to the test on the Father Junipero Serra Trail in Mission Trails Park, a 4.5 mile out-and-back route. It will challenge even the most experienced skaters.

Although it’s considered easy enough by walkers and joggers, for those on rollerblades, it’s a bit more difficult. This is due to the stones all along the path, be sure to wear all the essential safety gear.

The Father Junipero Serra Trail is more rural than other routes we’ve mentioned on this list of top San Diego roller skating spots. So bring plenty of water and sunscreen, just in case you can’t find anywhere to buy some.

Lake Murray

Lake Murray is less than a 20 minute drive from San Diego city center and has some brilliant skating opportunities for visitors.

The Lake Murray Trail is 5.7 miles, out and back, and takes about an 1 and 45 minutes to complete. If needed, you can always do half of it and turn back whenever you’re tired.

There are multiple benches placed on the trail for those who need to stop for a rest.

Lake Miramar 

The delightful Lake Miramar is admired by many for its peace and quiet. It’s surrounded by a five mile paved trail with two lanes which skaters are allowed to use. This is a public recreational area, so expect some traffic throughout, whether it’s bikers or joggers, but nothing too crazy.

Entry fees are only charged to those looking to fish or hire a boat, so you can enter the trail free of charge. Additional lake facilities include BBQs, picnic benches, and boat rentals.

Liberty Station

Open from mid-November through early-January every year, Rady Children’s Ice Rink offers classes at various times for the holiday season. All proceeds go towards the Thriving After Cancer Program at the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital, so your money is going to a good cause.

Entrance tickets for adults cost $20, and for children, $15. Official open dates for the 2023 season will be released closer to the time.

The Skate Squad SD

Skate Squad SD is looked after by a group of skaters who are obsessed with being on a pair of wheels.
